The History of Desierto de los Leones
1606 — The Founding
The Order of Discalced Carmelites chose this lush, isolated forest outside of Mexico City to build their convent. It was designed as a place of absolute peace, silence, and spiritual retreat away from the bustling city.
1814 — Abandonment
During the Mexican War of Independence, the monks were forced to abandon the convent. For nearly a century, the gorgeous stone architecture was left to the elements, allowing the surrounding forest to slowly reclaim the stone walls.
1917 — National Park
Recognizing the incredible beauty and historical significance of the area, President Venustiano Carranza declared Desierto de los Leones the very first National Park in Mexico, preserving the ruins and the forest forever.

Over 400 years after its founding, we are so honored to invite you to these historic walls to celebrate our marriage. The history of this breathtaking venue is about to include our favorite day ever.
